Warning: Please go to these surf spots before you hit up the more advance spots like Malibu, Tapanga, County Line, Leo, C-Street, and Rincon. These spots below are like Bunny Slops are to Skiing. In the more advance surfing spots people tend to be less inviting and sometimes very territorial. Please also remember that if you see a Yellow Flag with a black ball on it that there is no surfing allowed at that beach at that time.
Ventura's Beginner Spots 1 1. Mondo's Faria Cove off of old Hwy. 1 North of Ventura. Warm and Fuzzy - A gentle wave that's great for longboards and first-timers.
2. From beach houses to Emma Wood State Park on old Hwy.1 North of Ventura. A deep reef or sandy shore creates fun take-offs & stable rides or foam waves.
3. Hobson's State Park point
break rounds off into beach way North on old Hwy.1 N of Ventura. Best
on lower tides and always worth a look when Mondo's is flat. Quicker take-offs
help with progression. 4. Summer Beach Mile-long beach break north of Ventura with easy public access This break is all about maximizing wave time. Whitewater rides or small peaks make it a beginner winner. |

West Los Angeles, Malibu, and Santa Monica Surf Spots
1. El Porto has maintained its reputation more due to easy parking than any outstanding wave quality. El Porto's a northwest swell magnet, however, and is almost always bigger than any other spot in the South Bay during the winter months. The trick is to find the zone with the "holes," as the locals call it, referring to breaks in the relentless closeouts up and down the beach.
2. Santa Monica's Bay Street -- primarily because it has the best parking. As with most spots in this area, Bay Street works best when there are holes in the sand or during a crossed-up swell. 3. Sunset Beach - at the end of Sunset Blvd on PCH. Right next to Gladstones Resturant. 4. Zuma - This three-mile long beach is a popular summer spot for the Valley kids.
